This past weekend I was invited to a blogging event with Cincinnati Bloggers at Saks Fifth Avenue downtown. I was so excited and nervous all at the same time. In the past I had met some of these ladies, but it had been awhile since I had seen or talked to them. It looked like there was going to be about 20 women, most I have been following on Instagram and through their blogs.
Thinking of the perfect outfit and how to do my hair made me a little anxious. From following a lot of these women on Instagram, they had style and I can barely match my clothes. Making matters worse, mornings always go too fast, and I never have the time to get ready as I want. I decided to take a shower the night before and wear curlers while I slept in hopes it would save some time. I had done this a couple other times and it worked out fine. Well, of course this particular morning my hair was out of control. If it had been an 80’s party, my hair would have won first prize. Thankfully brushing it out and a top knot calmed it down a bit. Next was time to find the best outfit for the occasion. In the group chat we all decided we would go ‘dressy casual.’ I finally remembered a cute dress I got two years ago from the “Who What Wear” Target line around Christmas time. I decided to pair that with some pregnancy leggings, and ankle booties I found from Nordstrom Rack in DC.
In true Katie form, I got there about 30 minutes early. If I am by myself and it is somewhere new (which can make me nervous) I will be there extremely early. In my head I don’t want to be the one that shows up late, plus I need to scope out the location and my surroundings. Getting there early gave me sometime to wonder around the store, one which I have never been to before. This pregnant mama looked at all the pretty clothes that I couldn’t fit into at the moment, and was over my price range.
Meeting and Mingling with Cincinnati Bloggers
The event took place in their beauty department on the first floor, by the shoes. They had chairs setup with a Saks Fifth Avenue backdrop, which was nice of them to do for pictures. This event was held at the ideal time since beauty week was going on. As ladies started to show up we all introduced ourselves with our name and Instagram handle. It was nice to meet everyone in real life and see they are exactly who they portray themselves as online.
The Fifth Avenue Club
We were then introduced to the general manager, and other employees in Saks Fifth. Everyone was so welcoming and grateful to have us there. One person in particular who talked to us stood out, Emily Wall. She works in “The Fifth Avenue Club,” which is located on the second floor. It’s a free service offered by the store where they serve as your personal shopper and help fulfill your styling needs. You just have to let them know what your need is, likes/dislikes, if shopping for a particular event, and they will do the rest. Depending on your needs they will style you from head to toe and have it all ready when you get into the store. They offer private suites away from the hustle and bustle of the store which makes for a more intimate experience. Also, when talking with Emily she said she has clients who she sees every month, once/twice a year, and some she just speaks to on the phone. Another great service with this is if you see something online you want to order, but aren’t sure just call Emily and she will help you out.
Next the champagne was popped, the bites were out, and it was time to look around.
7 Minute Makeup Routine at the Bobbi Brown Counter
In my rush that morning, and hair failure, I realized all I had on was foundation. However, it was a good thing this was a beauty event in that department. I went up to the Bobbi Brown counter and met Tracy, and we got to talking. I told her about having a young son and how pregnancy is making me break out. She offered to show me a less than 7 minute makeup routine and I was intrigued. I have never properly learned how to put on makeup and wanted to learn quick easy tips.
Some tips and tricks Tracy taught me:
- Tinted moisturizer doesn’t need to be put everywhere, just where you need it. Perfect for discoloration and redness
- Bobbie Brown’s ‘Infamous Brow Kit’ comes with 2 different colors, brush, and tweezers. She used the light blonde color on me
- For redness on your face use natural color blush to help take redness away. Go light with the color don’t have to go heavy. Colors like peaches and coral are great.
- It’s all about blending!
- If you make a mistake while putting on mascara, wait until it dries before fixing it.
- On a day you are in an extra hurry just put on some mascara and lipstick and you will be good to go!
Being around like minded, driven, inspiring women that afternoon was exactly what I needed. It gave me a spark to hit the ground running and to continue to chase after my dreams of doing this blog. It is so easy to get caught up in comparison (I still do,) but meeting these women was a breath of fresh air. I hope to continue to grow these friendships and relationships throughout the year and beyond. As Cincinnati Blogger Instagram said, “Behind every successful woman is a TRIBE of other successful women who have her back.”
I cannot wait for the next event!
